Tradition . Pride . Excellence
Dear Band Parents,
Welcome to the South Granville High School Marching Band!
"It takes a village to raise a child."
We currently have 100 students involved in the SGHS Band program. Since 2013 with 34 students, the program has more than tripled in it's size, and parent involvement is important. We understand that this is an extremely busy time for you and your family, and encourage you to be involved in the band events*. You are a big part of what makes the South Granville High School Band a family. Please invest your time, talent, and help in the future of the SGHS Band program.
*Events: band meetings, band camp, football games, competitions, parades, concerts, and fundraisers.
FQA:
I would like to be a parent volunteer?
If you would like to be a parent volunteer, Granville County Public Schools require all volunteers to have a GCPS background check completed every two years. The background check is free of charge and you may do so by simply going online to http://granville.schoolblocks.com/student-and-support-services-2504f2f8/volunteer-program-ccab6a35 and there you will find the volunteer handbook as well. If you had completed the GCPS background check last school year, then you are compliant until the beginning of the following school year. Along with the back ground check, any use of smoking, alcoholic beverages, and illegal drugs are prohibitive during all school functions; around any and all students on or off campus.
How do I get involved?
The best way to get involved is to talk to one of the SGBPA Executive Board members. They welcome good help and will get you started.
When are the SGBPA Meetings?
The SGHS Band meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month in the Band Room at 6:15 pm. Meetings will normally last approximately 60 to 90 minutes, and are the most effective method of communication from the SGBPA and the Band Director to our Band parents. We strive to keep our band parents informed and we encourage them to be involved with the upcoming band related events. The purpose of these meetings is to achieve successful seasons for our Vikings.
What are the Band Dues used for?
Every year, our Band Program is given a set budget by the County Office to help with expenses. This budget only covers the cost of instrument repairs, purchases for instrument and equipment, and copyrights for the music used during marching and concert band seasons. Any costs incurred beyond that, the South Granville Band Parents Association is expected to cover. This cost fulfills the proper needs of the band and ensembles, and is less expensive than surrounding counties. These purchases include, but are not limited to, competitions fees, bus drivers, uniforms, plumes, gloves, gauntlets, show shoes, Percussion Instructors, Color Guard Instructor, guard equipment, end of band camp family party, seniors' night, 8th grade night, overnight trips, MPA transportation, end of the year band picnic, and any unexpected cost from concert band. There is an enormous amount of expense are not covered under the schools budget or the student dues.
A $50 Non-Refundable Registration Fee.
The $50 non-refundable registration fee deposit is mandatory on the first night of PreBand Camp. This deposit is used for general maintenance; which is not covered by the band dues.
Unpaid Student Band Accounts:
For students in arrears with Marching or Indoor Ensembles Dues: if payment activity goes dormant after 90 days or a payment plan is not in place by the start of the season, we reserve the right to decline student’s participation in Indoor Drumline/Winter Guard, the following Marching Season, Leadership Camp, or any other extracurricular band activities. The balance of the account will be transferred to SGHS's Fees & Fines. This amount remains on the students account until paid in full. A balance will hinder the students opportunity to walk across the stage at graduation.
We look forward to seeing and working with you and your family during this Marching Band season!
Sincerely,
SGBPA - South Granville Band Parents Association
